Ultimate Lego Build

Peanut got his biggest Lego set yet this year--the Gringott's Bank from Harry Potter which has almost 4000 peices!

It took about 15 hours over the last week, and he's done!

Such a cool set with so many amazing details. Lego really knows what they are doing with these Harry Potter sets. They're not cheap, but so worth the money.

On the Day Before School Starts

I didn't get very good before pictures (these are more like halfway-through pictures),

but we spent the last day of summer break moving Peanut into Bean's old room and shuffling everything around.

His new Harry Potter themed room is ready to go!

We were able to move all of his Lego into his bedroom which is going to be fabulous--both for his being able to set things up and play with them and leave them set up without disturbances, and for our family room to no longer look like the disaster it has been. Those black cubbies are pretty much full of Lego creations, as well as being displayed on just about every horizontal surface in the room.

He did keep up Bean's California map and pictures in the corner--he thought it would make her feel a little more at home when she comes back for vacations. Such a sweet brother.

Bug's room still needs a little work, but he's happy to have a little more space now and was able to take the rest of the Legos into his room. Now to clear off enough shelf space to display them. . .

Just Another Day

I'm not remembering to take many pictures, and those I'm taking are probably of questionable interest, haha. Kids are getting tired of me saying, "Wait, let me take a picture of you doing ____."

Tuesday was Bug's art class, piano lesson, and virtual park day/friend chats. Peanut and I made the model of his bedroom for his Park Day Lego challenge. A few too many colors going on, but I was proud that we could make the dressers and bookcases/shelves in the right color :) We just don't have enough white Legos.

We pulled out one of the new science games that I had bought for my class to play this year. This one (Periodic) was really fun--would have been great for our classes.

Tuesday Means. . .

-an early morning walk for me, and another a little later with the boys,

-Live No Sweat Nature Study for Peanut

where he learned about the riparian zone,

-art class for Bug, where he did this gorgeous continuous line drawing/watercolor,

- piano lesson for Bug,

-virtual park day, with Peanut and his friends making up word puzzles to solve (or typing gibberish)

-virtual park day with a few of the older kids, where they did Lego challenges for a couple hours,

-park day for me, where I read and dozed on a blanket on the lawn for an hour,

-coloring on the patio (which looks so uncomfortable, but he stayed there a long time),

-yoga and strength workout for Bean,

-a volcanic eruption.

There was also some reading, videos about eclipses and volcanoes, drawing, zoom meetings and studying for Bean, lots of emails to the charter school about end of year stuff for me, a virtual seminary class for Daddy-o and Bean, lots of cooking and eating, and an early bedtime so we can get up at 4 a.m. to look for shooting stars from the Lyrid meteor shower. It was a pretty full day, and yet felt so sluggish for a couple of us. Some days are just not great. Glad that some are.

Happy Christmas to All!

Ready for the kids to come:

Santa knew that this year's theme was Star Wars all the way. Getting new light sabers just days after watching the last of the movies just amped up the excitement. I think they're going to get a lot of fun out of these!

And while the picture may be blurry, I love the excitement over the Legos here. We have so many already, but they welcome each new set with ecstatic joy.

Peanut's Harry Potter craze might return. Star Wars had tempered his interest in the wizarding world a bit, but getting the Great Hall Lego set may have just revived it. Whew--I was worried we would lose to the force. 😂

Once all the gifts were opened, these boys got right to it. Lots of Lego building to get done.

Side note: Peanut wore his new hiking backpack around for hours. That was a surprise hit--I figured it was more of a necessary piece of equipment that helped me out (I don't have to carry his water and snacks anymore!), but he is pretty excited about having his own pack and camelback. Guess we need to get out there and do some hiking!

The rest of the day was spent in pajamas, playing with new toys (except for the hour I got out and went for a walk). The kids watched Arthur Christmas, ate too much candy, topped it all off with a delicious ham dinner, and we ended the evening with a round of Saboteur, a new card game. All in all, it was a good day with family.

January Jumble

I suppose it's only fitting that with my goal of being late, I'm am really behind posting anything this last month. Life has felt busy as always, and I've actually been going to bed a lot earlier most nights lately, sometimes at 8 p.m. when I put Peanut to bed, which has meant less computer time. But here are a few of the high lights.
Starting with Daddy-o, even though it was one of the most recent events, we celebrated his last year on this side of "the hill", and the end of our January sugar fast, with the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake that we all love. Although, as seems to be tradition for Daddy-o's cake, things didn't turn out quite right. Sometimes the ganache sets up just right, sometimes it doesn't. I had to whip it this year because it wasn't going all smooth and glossy how it should have, but no one seemed to mind too much.

And we decided to give him a toy this year. He'd had a lot of fun playing on the Rip Sticks at his brother's house a few weeks ago, so we thought he'd like one of his own. The kids also thought he'd share, which made them pretty excited this gift. He's been generous with the new toy and it looks like I need to put in some practice hours if I want to be able to keep up with everyone.

In other athletic news, these two joined me for the Trail Race this year because they really wanted the hoodies.

They were also excited to run with a friend--friends keep the whining down so we can all enjoy it a lot more. Luckily, for all of us, it once again rained a bunch the day before the race and we were only able to actually run about 1.5 miles of the 4 because a lot of the trail was really slippery.

I wish I'd gotten a better picture of the mud because this one doesn't do it justice, but I was too busy trying to keep my balance on the trail and never even thought of pulling out my phone. Both kids said it was the best race ever and wear their sweatshirts non-stop, so I'd say it was a success.

Next up, Bug: He started Lego club after school this month and has had fun building one a week with friends. This week's challenge was to create a creature or home. Bug and his partner made "Big Nosed Al".

January is also Pinewood Derby month, so Bug got to make a car as well.

He opted for a double-humped sport car shape, which didn't end up being the fastest, but it looked pretty cool. Notice the Panthers car in the background--pretty much the whole room was cheering for that one. We've had fun watching the Panthers win and are hoping for one more!

I got to drive on Bug's field trip to the retirement home a couple weeks ago, and as always, got teary as they sang to the residents. I love these service learning trips and these kids.

I also got to help put on the first Recognition Night we've done with Activity Days Girls in this ward. We borrowed a theme I found online, It's In the Bag, and each of the girls prepared a bag with three items that represent things they have done in Activity Days or while working on their Faith in God award.

Bean shared a spoon, representing a healthy meal she made for our family, a picture of the pedigree chart she made, and her pinewood derby car from last year that she made and raced in the sibling category.

We had a popcorn bar for refreshments (because then we could use popcorn bags to go with the bag theme).

We may have picked out the theme for them, but the girls made all of the decorations for that night--these tissue paper flower pens, that we put into a bag vase,

and these paper bag flowers, as well as filling out the tags that we hung as a banner across the front of the room with all the things they've worked on.

I have so much fun working with this group and Bean loves it, too.

Bean also made a pinewood derby car this year. It was a last minute effort, because even though she really wants to make the car, she also has a million other things she really wants to do with any free time she has. Plus, I think our entire family works best under pressure so why mess with tradition.

Bean's still been busy with basketball. Their team got their first win this month and has had a couple other really close games. Even though the coaching hasn't been quite what we think a team of beginners probably needed, they have improved quite a bit.

She's had fun and is looking forward to being able to play church ball as well next year.

And then there's Peanut, the little one who gets dragged to basketball games, pinewood derby's, and church activities, and then left behind for some of the fun stuff that just doesn't work for a 4 year old. Luckily, there are other little brothers at these things and he's made some friends over electronics.

He actually surprised me the other morning when I was getting ready and realized, as I got out of the shower, that he hadn't come up to hang out in the bathroom like he usually does if we're the only two people home. It was pretty quite and I was afraid of what I might find when I came out, but instead of making messes, he had gotten ahold of Bug's tablet and found a game and was happily playing at the desk in the living room. I've been a little more liberal with screen time for him and I have to say we're both happier for it. Parenting ideals don't always work out with the realities of life, especially for the youngest, so he gets to watch DVD's if we're in the car for longer than a quick run to the schools and back, play games when we're stuck waiting, and should have his alphabet memorized any day now with how many times he's watching Letter Factory each week. I tell myself it's educational, but whatever it is, it's better than him yelling at me, so I'll take it.

And that is pretty much our January, with the exception of the snowstorm, which gets its own post.

Funny Bug

"My good brain killed my bad brain."  (The bad brain is what tells him to do things he shouldn't do.  He used to tell us, "My bad brain made me do it!")

While Peanut was eating:  "He sounds like a piggy when he drinks."  (He's right--the little Peanut can do some pretty impressive snorting.  And burps.  He's got all the sound effects down.)

Bug started making food and utensils from his Legos the other day.  Above?  A chicken leg--"It's for a first communion!"  Guess the chicken they served last weekend at the party for our neighbor's first communion really stood out to him.

And finally, as Daddy-o and Bug were leaving to run some errands today:  "Daddy, do you remember when you used to go to work?"  Bugaboo is LOVING having so much time with his daddy each day.

And finally, just because he's so cute--
(And speaking of sleeping--he's still doing quite a bit of it, although he isn't going down for naps quite so easily, but last night, he actually did two 3 hour stretches in his bed!  I could get used to this!)
